Te Arawa Trustee Training- Institute of Directors

Te Arawa Lakes Trust (TALT) has worked towards the development of strong trusteeship through the provision of this five day trustee course.  This will provide benefits for TALT beneficiaries as well as strengthening the wider Rotorua community.   Through this trustee course participants have learnt and developed their skills in relationship to;

Role: developing intrinsic knowledge on what a trustee's role is and what their responsibilities are.

Governance:  Knowing what is governance as opposed to management.

Transparency: How to conduct their various trusts in a transparent manner in order to safeguard their operations

Accountability: how to facilitate the highest level of accountability to their beneficiaries.

Effectiveness: most importantly trustees will develop their effectiveness in order to achieve a higher level of success for their trusts and thereby providing maximum returns for their beneficiaries.

Ultimately this will strengthen the Te Arawa Economy enabling Te Arawa to cater, provide and nurture its future generations.

Nau Mai Place

Te Arawa Lakes Trust entered into a joint venture with Ice Hits Ltd, a company that developed a website called Naumaiplace.com, an online portal that allows Whanau, Hapu & Iwi to communicate locally, nationally and globally via the internet, by allowing Marae to host their very own website and engage their whanau, wherever they may be.

The original 10 participating marae for the pilot programme; Taheke, Te Pakira, Whakaue, Rangitihi, Taurua, Tutanekai, Hinemihi, Te Roro o Te Rangi, Tapuaeharuru and Tarimano, have all graduated after successfully completing their 6 week website training in aspects of website development. The content managers are now able to utilise their skills for their marae by sharing with the rest of the world their uniqueness, stories and experiences of past, present and future.

The second phase of the project was to provide the opportunity for all other Te Arawa Marae to take advantage of the training.

An advisory committee consisting of Marae representatives has been set up to monitor ongoing needs and developments.

Rangatakapu- Te Arawa Emerging Leaders

This initiative is designed to pilot a leadership development programme for emerging leaders committed to the future of Te Arawa (Rangatakapu between 20 and 45 years old) which builds on succession leadership competency. It was widely acknowledged in the Tahana Report 2006 that there was a lack of effective leadership in Te Arawa and it identified strong support for creating a unified voice or entity to lead the collective development of Te Arawa while simultaneously strengthening leadership.

The outcomes of the programme are to develop the customized needs of Te Arawa and its emerging leaders; emerging leaders achieve new knowledge and levels of competency that enhances their role as the future leadership of Te Arawa; and the evaluation report should reflect the programme's success and on going need for continuity.
